Graham Slater - Oakshot Gundogs

Welcome to Oakshot Gundogs

Gundog training, like many disciplines is filled with minefields, contradictions and differences of opinion.

Some trainers feel that a dog is not ready to learn before it is a year or even 18 months old. Some owners believe that instinct will prevail, so a couple of months training will do.

We at Oakshot gundogs believe that a dogs education should be treated like any other learning, little and often, right and wrong, start early and don’t rush.

We agree that a puppy must have a puppyhood, but it can learn a lot of manners without realising. You can learn a lot about your puppy by watching. Does it run to the gate to see what is out there, or try to get back into the house. Is he/she a chaser, a wallflower or pushy.

Our own puppies get little exercise – play is enough. Toys without squeeks. We feed a barf and dry food diet combined. We let the body develop before putting joints under strain. We do not treat train – we reward train.

Our aim is to produce educated, healthy, well rounded dogs which are fit for function

We believe that there is no such thing as ‘just a peg dog’. A good peg dog is as impressive as any Ft. Ch. But rush the training at your peril. Teach, practice, reinforce.

We at Oakshot believe in health checks before breeding. A low hip score in a Sire and Dam will not guarantee a low score in a litter – but it will increase the chances.

If you agree with our objectives – then speak to us about the best course of action towards training your dogs.

What we do

  • We do classes – your dog in full residential training – one to one.
  • Puppies, part trained and fully trained dogs are sometimes available.
  • We also train for Working Tests and for Field Trials.
